The Dream

by Dana Enache

Description

I see her. She’s climbed up on the kitchen counter watching me, as a predator follows its prey: quietly, without any movement, without any noise. I ignore her and open the fridge to get the bottle of apple juice. I take a glass out of the cupboard, pour my juice and sit down at the table. I finish drinking, put the bottle back and look at her again. She has pitch-black eyes, but all monsters have them, don’t they? They are so dark that I can't even tell if she has pupils or not. I turn my back on her again and go to the bedroom, only this time I can't fall asleep. I know she's there; I feel her. I know she's watching me throughout the day, even if I don't see her during daylight. I'm afraid of her just because she doesn't do anything. She just sits there and watches me. I feel like she’s waiting for me to do something or not do something to have a reason to catch me, but then I think that’s absurd. Supernatural creatures that want to hurt you don't need a reason. They don't wait until you do something specific, swear at an old woman on the street, kick a cat, or watch underage porn movies. If she showed up here, my fate is probably sealed already and there's no point in letting it get on my nerves. A collection of short horror and psychological stories that plays with agony, fear and trauma of different characters. Which one will be your favourite?
